I love pantyhose, I have been wearing since I was 12. Does anyone know why we become so obsessed with pantyhose? I have some theories but I would love to hear what you all think
I'm sorry I meant to post this in the main forum. New here sorry!
@Alison Nylon It's different for girls than for guys of a certain age.
For girls, it's mostly about wanting to be older, or to be perceived as such because with age comes priviledge. The priviledge of having a later curfew, or going to shopping centres with your girlfriends instead of having to have your mom with you, or even just going to a school dance without a chaperon. For girls, it mostly means wearing make up, doing your hair a certain way, or wearing certain clothes or types of clothes. Pantyhose (stockings) were recognized by most girls and their mothers as a rite of passage. It was once you got permission to wear them all the time (at school) and not just on special occasions like at church or to birthday parties and dances, it was your official nod to having now joined womanhood.
I think that prepubescent boys likely started to notice an awakening in their minds and imaginations right around the time young girls were transforming in front of their eyes into beautiful young women. They noticed the make up, and hair, and the different clothing we started wearing. I think that pantyhose (as well as other delicate underthings) became a constant mystery and source of fascination to the young lads. When you'd catch them day dreaming in class, you usually caught them staring at your legs tucked under your desk. Girls were definitely high on their interest list, and anything that had to do with cute girls and what they wore, or spent their time doing was of interest to boys.
I think pantyhose was a bit of an obsession with a lot of guys who had newly become interested with girls. As a girl, if you wore them, you noticed you seemed to get more attenton paid to you, and if you wore them to a school dance, the guys loved it enough to tend to ask you to dance more often, even the fast songs! If you took off your shoes so you weren't taller than they were for a slow dance, the guys seemed to really appreciate that and seemed to stick around you for most of the rest of the night. Some girls had noticed that coincidence of events and would compare notes with each other noting the boys' reactions.
I think that for guys, it all tied in with puberty and that powerful chemical change going on in their bodies and brains. Perhaps pantyhose was merely a catalyst for all that. All I know is that it really did leave an imprint with some guys that will likely last their life time.

@Carrie Stuart Thanks for your female perspective Carrie, I really appreciate it.
For me, I grew up in the 60's and 70's and pantyhose were worn by all women that era. Teachers, aunts, fellow students, cousins and moms all wore then As a boy and teenager growing up around that definitely left an impression!
There are probably many reasons why some are obsessed. I think it is more in common in males than females. In fact, I would be surprised if any females are actually obsessed. I also think everybody has their own unique reason for their obsession.
Carrie, a true pantyhose and heel lady, stated that females view pantyhose as a rite of passage. It is a time when girls graduate to a more sophisticated and adult time in their lives. I think women also notice the attention that legs in a sexy pair of hosiery may bring them. So, not sure if women are obsessed with the item itself or the attention. I see the attention as perhaps the obsession they may develop. There may be a few women who like the look and feel of pantyhose but not sure if it is to the level of obsession. Most women view hosiery as just another accessory to their outfit.
I think this question might be more applicable to men. And the obsession question, to narrow it down -is the obsession with seeing pantyhose on women, is it wearing pantyhose on your body, is it feeling pantyhose on your partner, is it shopping for pantyhose? Maybe it is all the above but this is where everyone is unique. I think obession may develop in males more than females because men don't have access to this item and can only fantasize about it when they are young. Pantyhose are a unique item of clothing that are different from any item that men traditionally wear. The heterosexual male may also be imprinted at some point in their lives and mostly at an early age at seeing a pretty lady/ladies wearing pantyhose. They may make an association between pretty women and their legs in hosiery. I don't know enough about how the brain is wired and works but from what I have read males seem to develop this fascination when young. Constantly seeing women in pantyhose reinforces and seems to perpetuate their obsession.
My interest in hosiery goes back to my early ages. I didn't have one particular event that captivated my interest. I do remember looking at a children's book and seeing an illustration of a girl wearing hosiery and for some reason it stood out. I was aware that females wear hosiery and males don't. I also remember seeing knee-high hosiery hanging over a laundry basket and I was so curious about the texture I had to try it on but stopped quickly out of fear. The look and tactile experience really started to peak my interest. On television you would also constantly see pretty women with gorgeous legs. And then the advertisement was also impactful...pantyhose are smooth, silky, and energizing. Not only did I enjoy how sexy women looked but I also wanted to experience what it would be like to wear them myself. Not an easy thing to do when you are young and a male. I had wild ideas about getting locked in a department store and having full access to the hosiery section. My mind would conjure up other ways to try to acquire pantyhose. This is where the obsession intensifies because as a male you just can't go to the hosiery section and pick out a pair of pantyhose without a great deal of humilation. You can't discuss with your friends what you think about pantyhose and what it might be like to wear them. And you certainly can't put on a pair in front of others without being embarrassed.
It seems pre-teen to early teens is that moment where the pantyhose obsessed finally have their moment. I eventually acquired my favorite color which was a gentle brown. Waiting for the opportunity when nobody was around, I locked myself in our bathroom. This obsession was about to come to fruition. With all my clothes off, I began the process. The feel of the pantyhose in my hands was intense. I am a visual and tactile person and finally having this opportunity was amazing. I didn't quite know how to put on the pantyhose (that's what happens when you are a male) but I slowly worked them over my feet and up my legs. There was a bit of hesition as I brought them up to my knees feeling like I'm breaking gender conformity, however, I had to continue to experience this enjoyable event. Pulling the pantyhose up my thighs, over my groin and finally around my waist completed the realization of this obsession. There was a pink stripe going around the waist that I thought looked pretty girly but heck these are made for women and so be it. Although I felt conflicted wearing the pantyhose I did love how they gave a gentle caress, added a nice color and consistency to my legs. It was interesting to see how they molded to my legs, my toes and skin visible under the taut fabric. I crossed my legs like I had seen so many pretty ladies do, I stood up and felt the cool floor on my feet, I examined how I looked in the mirror and turned around to see how the pantyhose sculpted my body. Wearing pantyhose felt wonderful and in my mind I was thinking how lucky females were to be able to wear anytime they wanted without fear or humilation.
My obsession continued. Being a pantyhose novice, I was to learn there are so many brands, styles, colors, and glossiness to pantyhose. Plus, I wanted to experiment with other ways to enhance the pantyhose wearing experience like shaving my legs and even trying stiletto heels. Not that I wanted to look like a female and perhaps some men are obsessed with this aspect, I just wanted my legs to look great and stilettos seemed to accomplish that.
Maybe obsession needs to be defined considering there are degrees ranging from mild, fixated thoughts to severe, consuming behaviors that impact life. I would say my obsession doesn't impact my life negatively (besides the expense of buying hosiery and the time spent viewing content) but it is frequently on my mind. Seeing a sexy pair of legs in public definitely draws my attention, maybe a little too much. Wondering if she is wearing hosiery or not. Even on televsion or in the movies, I am going to notice if there is hose wearing. While most are paying attention to content I'm obsessed and focused on the legs in pantyhose. I'm thinking to myself...those legs look amazing, I wonder if she enjoys wearing them and what it might feel like to wear myself.
Some may be obsessed to wear all the time, for me, I'm a casual wearer and feel no distress if I can't wear them in any given time. Plus, I like the break between wearing, it makes the experience fresh. I can see how women might grow tired if they are forced to wear daily and for long stretches. But if someone feels anxiety if they can't wear frequently, that could become a problem.
Looking at and responding to content online could also be part of the obsession. Seeing beautiful legs in pantyhose, reading pantyhose related stories, posting content. Boy, I sometimes wonder what I could have achieved if I spent a little less time seeking out pantyhose content.
Obsession may even include shopping for pantyhose. The time we spend looking at sights and deciding what might be fun to order. Or driving to a store to look at a selection on display. For men, that may mean driving a distance where nobody might recognize you, avoiding embarrassment. But the time, money and commitment it takes someone can be part of the obsession.
The obsession of walking by a pantyhose display and feeling awkward about focusing a little too much on the products. Maybe circling around a few times so as not to look too interested on the pantyhose for sale. Trying to grab a glimpse of the packaging and contents. Being a little too interested in the hosiery versus anything else in the store. Maybe seeing a pretty female spending time making a selection knowing she will be wearing them in the near future.
Why we become obsessed with pantyhose appears to be many things. Definitely for me it must have been those early visuals of beautiful women looking confident and sexy. The elegance of the leg in something so sexy and delicate. The uniformity of the leg, the color of the leg, and the curiosity of what the tactile sensation of the material on the leg must feel like. For some the visual of a female in hosiery is enough for others it is also trying on pantyhose and enjoying the sensation and look.
@SheerMark I'd like to commend Mark on how well he was able to describe the essence of "obsession" and the varying examples and degrees of which it exists. I had no idea of the level(s) of compulsion some of you guys deal with when the urge takes you.
I think, initially, girls too can be obsessed with pantyhose. My mom would probably have pointed out to me how obsessive my behaviour was about wanting to wear pantyhose until the point she and my dad finally accorded me permission to wear them when I wanted, as long as I didn't expect them to pay for new ones all the time when I got a run in them. (they were also not wanting me as a preteen girl to be sending signals to older boys at school because of my clothing) I had been driving my mom crazy for probably 2 years (grades 6 & 7) before she finally caved in and said I could wear them whenever I wanted, and not just at special functions like church, girlfriends' birthday parties, or Xmas and Easter.
I took full advantage (and even kept some ripped pairs to be able to wear them under my jeans) for their smooth soft texture. Levis, Lee and Wrangler jeans were made of heavy weight cotton denim, back then. There was no such thing as stretch denim, like the kind our skinny jeans are made from these days. Regular jeans in the late 70s through the 80s were all pretty rough and weren't exactly nice to our skin, particularly in the more tender areas. Pantyhose to the rescue. Do you guys remember fairly often seeing a girl wearing pantyhose under her jeans and wondering why? Maybe you didn't care why, and simply enjoyed seeing it, not questioning the logic behind it. I understand that's a bit of a male obsession, too...seeing a woman with pantyhose on under her jeans, particularly if she's also wearing high heels with her jeans? No?
I think it's safe to say that you guys can turn anything into an obsession, or fetishize some of the most mundane things. Not calling out the enjoyment you guys obtain from pantyhose as weird or fetishistic behaviour, nor that to be criticized. There's a lot to like about soft sheer hosiery, in general. And I do. But it's not a sexual thing or a turn-on, per se for the overwhelming vast majority of women. There is a very niche group of women who DO participate in certain activitities in which pantyhose are a key element with respect to sexual pleasure. I'll let you fill in the blanks. So, in that respect, I guess it IS possible for women to have an obsession about pantyhose, but those girls are very much barely a statistical notation when compared to the percentage of men who might.
By the time I was half way through high school and had been regularly incorporating pantyhose into my school outfits (and everything else I wore) without even thinking about it, the initial excitement some of us had 2 years or so earlier wasn't even noted by then. The subject didn't come in chatter around the lockers, or while getting redressed after phys-ed class like it used to. You'd only hear the word if something untoward happened to the pair you or a friend were wearing...like ripping them while trying to get dressed in too much of a hurry after gym class, or if your new pair of leather mary janes rubbed a hole in the heel of your nylons at some point during the school day and someone noticed and pointed it out to you. The novelty of wearing them had pretty much worn off.
About the only time(s) when the topic would come up is when/if one of us had noticed a good sale on a popular brand some of us were known to like to wear, or if there was something that happened between one of the gang's boyfriends and pantyhose were somehow involved. (like the day outside Hilary's locker when she whispered a secret to her closest girlfriends that her grade 11 boyfriend had made a special request of her to always wear pantyhose with her skirts, and even under her jeans) She also told us that he particularly loved it when she took off her shoes and spent as much time as possible without them when she was wearing pantyhose. I think that was when I connected male kink to pantyhose, even though I really didn't understand how any of that worked. All I knew, and found out more later, was that he wasn't the only guy who had a thing for nylons on girls' legs.
I think, though, that Mark is pretty much entirely correct that it's only guys who obsess about the actual article of clothing, and women who, if you can call it that, can have an obsession for the kind of attention we receive from guys when we wear pantyhose. But that would be stretching the definition of obssession, I feel. As Mark also rightly stated, each individual sets their boundaries for what they'd label as obsessive behaviour. But I think a general consensus would include any behaviour that causes issues or problems with other aspects of your life would be labelled as an obsession. Would that be synonomous with an addiction? Who thinks I might have a high heel obsession?

Carrie, I see your point that the novelty of wearing pantyhose eventually wore off and I'm sure that is most likely true for those who wear on a consistent basis. I think it is like anything in life, anything new and exciting eventually wanes. Your early excitement about wanting to wear pantyhose sounds like a lot of youngsters who are excited and curious about something new, unique, and adult oriented. Over time things we do over and over again become routine, so the initial excitement subsides. Your early excitement was probably similar to the young males out there who also found themselves interested in hosiery.
I was the same age as Carrie when my opportunity to finally wear pantyhose happened. I wasn't trying to dress like a female even though hosiery does give that impression. I wanted to satisfy my curiosity/obsession about what this foreign item might felt like on my body and how I would look wearing them. I was definitely very pleased with the experience. The smooth silky texture hugging my body from waist to toes, the color change of my legs, the subtle sheen of my legs all highlighted the experience. It felt very enjoyable sitting there in something so silky, delicate and sophisticated.
As Carrie stated wearing pantyhose became routine for her, the male experience is quite different. Males most likely are wearing in secret and only if they can actually acquire a pair. Maybe this contributes to the obsession. Getting your hands on a pair of pantyhose isn't the easiest thing to do when you are twelve. Guys can go for months and years before another opportunity may present itself. Seeing pretty legs in pantyhose and wanting to actually experience the feeling of wearing again can make a male pretty obsessed. My wearing experience has been on and off and I think that makes it a little novel. It is nice being able to choose when and for how long I want to wear pantyhose.
It wasn't until I grew a little older and decided why not go to the store and purchase my own pantyhose to have when I wanted to wear. As a male it was very scary shopping in the women's department searching through the hosiery selection...what would the sales associate think of me buying pantyhose. So many things run through the male mind when he is buying for himself but it was also an opportunity to find the right size for my body and a color I liked. But walking up to the cashier was definitely nerve-wracking. Maybe I even have a bit of obsession with wanting to buy and try so many different brands and styles.
Quite a collection of heels Carrie, probably not an obsession yet, maybe when you hit 500 pairs. Unless there are more you are not showing us. I remember when I first started wearing pantyhose. I was thinking about wearing a pair of heels with them, perhaps because that was so common. I eventually did start to buy and wear stilettos because I loved the pairing with pantyhose. And speaking of novelty, adding heels does add a new dimension to hose wearing.
@Carrie Stuart Great picture of your high heels. I don't think you have an obsession just passionate about beautiful high heels enjoy
@David S Thanks David. I feel I've let it get out of hand a bit. But I've been doing much better over the past year, possibly 2. I no longer have to have every style in every colour, or very similar styles by a few different makers all in classic black. It gets bad when you can see the beauty of design and appreciate all the different materials they are made in.
I think you get to a point when you recognize that you never really wear specific styles often enough to justify the cost of them. When you've got a $500+ shoe (several of them) that you only get to reach for when you are attending a fancy event, and that there are perhaps only about a half dozen special events per year, the math and logic says that's a hell of a waste of good money. How do you solve that sort of habit?
