Athletics and legwear

  • The topic of preparing legs when wearing pantyhose seems to focus exclusively on keeping legs shaved.  I have previously read an article about making sure your legs are in shape to enhance the look of hosiery which seems equally important. Doesn't a pair of legs look fantastic in pantyhose when the legs are well-toned?

In sports these days, hosiery has become rather common.  Most likely for compression, reducing muscle vibration during competition, and perhaps for post workout recovery.  When I was young I remember women wearing support pantyhose when walking.  I thought their suntan legs looked wonderful glistening in the sun.  I also remember a news segment where the reporter was in the locker room with a NFL football player being asked if he would wear pantyhose to help with performance during competition.  The player looked rather uncomfortable while holding a pair of suntan pantyhose.  Anyway, athletics and legwear sparked my memory of when I swam in high school.

I think people are aware that swimmers shave their bodies when competing in big events.  In high school it was a ritual when finals approached.  As a team we would "shave down" heading into end of the season swim meets.  It was expected of us in order to produce our best results of the season.  We would go to our friends house and do a group shave.  I remember a couple of pretty girls coming over as well to witness the event.  It was the first time we, as males, experienced this sensation-a smooth, hair free body with more sensation to the touch.  I liked the feel...clean and smooth.  I enjoyed how my legs felt underneath my bedsheets.  I even remember one attractive girl in my chemistry class rubbing my leg to experience it herself.

Before practice one day, the coach was talking to our team about shave down and preparing for finals.  Shaving was talked about and how it removed the dead skin layer to help improve water feel.  His explanation was that it exposes the nerve endings and will feel like you are gliding through the water.  There is also the drag factor-reducing friction when in the water.  What was interesting was that someone asked how we could preserve the feeling before our actual race.  The coach explained that some swimmers will wear nylons until their actual event.  This seemed kind of crazy to me...males shaving their bodies and wearing pantyhose!

I remember going to our friends house after practice.  He had actually asked his mom to buy him pantyhose for this.  His mom showed up a little later after we had been there.  And when she walked through the front door handed him a pair of pantyhose in it's package.  I knew the major brands but did not recognize the brand she bought (probably a cheap department store brand).  I do remember they were a suntan/brownish shade.  Another one of my friends checked out the package and started reading the description as if intrigued...cotton crotch, etc.

Anyway, it was a unique experience.  Not all the males wore pantyhose, in fact only a few did.  However, I do remember at the qualification meet one guy from another team diving into the pool wearing jet black pantyhose.  The whole idea was an interesting sight to see, athletic male swimmers with shaved bodies wearing pantyhose.  I guess just another one of those athletic circumstances where pantyhose serve a function.  So be observant, your swimmer friends might be pantyhose wearers!

  • When I was a teenager, my family was finally able to afford a membership at a local private pool and swim club.  My dad loved to swim, and my younger brother and I enjoyed the social aspect of being around other kids at the pool, some of whom we'd seen at school during the year.

I took several Red Cross swim courses and soon had my Intermediate, and then Senior badges that we proudly displayed on our suits.  That's how you could spot the good swimmers, and those who held "status" within the gaggle of kids who went to the pool on hot days just to cool off during the hottest times of the afternoon until nearly dinner time every day.

My dad got himself on the Adult swim team and competed in club meets for fun.  I was quite small at that age and barely weighed over 100 lbs, even at age 14.  I was too small to be cometitive against most of the girls I saw on the swim team.  But I was quite athletic in other ways, and joined the dive team.  We practiced in a different part of the pool at the same time the swim teams were training.

One day, I noticed there were a few swimmers wearing pantyhose and wondered what was up with that!  It was explained to me that it was part of their resistence training.  Wet pantyhose added weight to them, and created a fair bit of drag while being pulled through the water.  Who knew? !!

I've long known that the guys shaved their legs to lessen the drag and increase their slippage through the water, but knew nothing about them wearing pantyhose, or why it was that common with swimmers.  My dad clued me in, too, that cyclists also had shaved legs for the same reason of drag.  My dad used to be a cyclist, road racer, when he was younger and living in Ireland.  Made perfect sense to me why they were doing it.  But I have to admit is was a kind of weird sight seeing guys in soaking wet dripping pantyhose walking around the pool deck once they get out to towel off.

  • The competitive swim subculture is interesting in regards to the shaving and pantyhose wearing.  Who would really know about it unless you were participating.  Our first time shaving was obviously different because it was something new and was our first time but in the following years it became routine.  Taking a shower and shaving my legs wasn't such a big deal once you did it a few times.  Wearing pantyhose wasn't mandatory but shaving kind of was.  Funny thing, the girls were supposed to not shave during the season so they could also benefit.  Not sure if all of them refrained.

Yes, very different and weird to see men wearing pantyhose poolside but when you are involved in a sport and get to know it some of these rituals don't really raise eyebrows, it just becomes accepted behavior.  But imagine an ordinary person walking into a pool area and seeing hairless guys maneuvering around the pool deck wearing pantyhose.  In regards to other sports, I think I would also see a few high school wrestlers wearing tights as part of their uniform but once again their own subculture.

I remember a pretty freshman girl named Ashley who was actually a very good swimmer.  I was in her proximity when an older male swimmer came out confidently wearing his pantyhose.  She seemed to snicker and thought it was kind of gross.  I think that was the only comment I heard.  I think everyone else accepted it.  Myself, being someone who likes pantyhose was very aware of what was going on around me but would not bring it up as topic for discussion.  I was kind of surprised witnessing it myself.  It was also funny seeing discarded pantyhose in the shower area after our practice.

Certain activities have their own uniqueness or rituals just like the cyclists you mention who shave their legs.  With the freshman girl who seemed shocked about the pantyhose wearing male swimmer, it makes me wonder if it is/was more surprising to males or females.  I never heard any of the male swimmers making any comments.  Maybe it was just too out of place for this young swimmer.

  • About leg shaving...I remember that around the time midway through puberty, most girls had started shaving, whether or not they wore sheer pantyhose regularly.  I was a late bloomer during puberty and because I was fair haired, leg hair on me was barely noticeable.  At least that was what my mom told me when I asked her about shaving.  She told me not to start unless I was ready to do it for the rest of my life.  (trying to scare me away from it)

Some girls barely had any hair at all on their legs, but others used to grow quite a forest, especially the darker haired girls.  A lot of the blonde girls only shaved from below their knees and let what fine hair they had above that just remain untouched.  The darker haired girls couldn't get away with doing a half leg shave.  I mostly only shaved below my knees.  Nobody seemed to know any difference.  It was especially noticeable in phys-ed class.  It wasn't so much that we noticed much in our regular clothes unless you were going barelegged in a very short little pleated skirt.  By grade 10, most girls were somewhat regularly wearing pantyhose with their skirts.  Before that, there was an even mix of girls in knee socks and pantyhose with skirts.
We  figured out that the guys liked us in pantyhose more than just knee socks when we wore skirts.  Once the word got out among the girls, we all started showing up in pantyhose.  Jeans suddenly became a lot less popular, even though they had been pretty much the default high school attire from about grade 8 onward.  By the time grade 10 started, all the girls were wearing short little twead pleated skirts (think kilt style), white blouses, and thin cardigans over them.  Dr. Scholls exercise sandals became all the rage, too.  We'd dumped our T-strap dress shoes.  And Adidas ROM running shoes were required footwear for every kid who wanted to be "cool".  Adidas with your blue jeans, and Dr Scholls with your skirt(s) and pantyhose.  They weren't designed to be worn with slippery hosiery, but we explained it away that our legs were getting an even more intense workout just trying to keep from losing them when you walked.  Their design made you scrunch your toes just to keep them on...barefoot.  Imagine the challege with hosiery.
The guys seemed to like that we wore them with pantyhose, as losing a shoe was an endless source of entertainment for them.  They'd be quick to kick your Dr Scholls down the hallway if you managed to lose it while trying to hurry class, or they'd pick up a random Dr Scholls in the crowded boistrous hallway and stick it in someone's locker to hide it until the next period was over.  You'd have to go to class like that, missing one shoe.  Little buggers!
I honestly don't know if they had a thing for girls wearing nylons without their shoes, or whether it was just that they loved to torment us and play keep away with our shoes if we lost one while running to class trying not to be late.  But there were an awful lot of girls sometimes scurrying to class in our nylons carrying our clogs so we wouldn't lose one and have to sit through the entire class wondering where it was, or if you'd get it back before lunch hour.  It was a bit embarrassing to sit in class with only the one shoe on and have 25 pairs of eyes staring at your pedicure, and the teacher wondering what all the commution was in my area.
