Shapings vs Tights Spot. Canada vs UK The BEST PRICES are a No-Brainer if you live in Canada

  • Too much time on my hands??

Inspired by a posting by Alex L 13 days ago under the simple title CdR, I thought I'd do a little price shopping, as any frugal consumer might.  I took it upon myself to do some comparing between one of the big dogs in hosiery retail, (Tights Spot) and our own home grown awesome CANADIAN Shapings.com.  Guess what I found?

Well, let me tell you about it, in detail.  But if you want the headline only...let me sum it up in one sentence; SHAPINGS kicked butt in every single head to head price comparison (as well as in delivery time to the Canadian market).  In fact, it was a shutout !!!
Caveat:  Where common styles and brands to both retailers were compared.  Yup.  Shapings was/is head and shoulders above the pack in supplying quality hosiery products at world beating prices to Canadian consmers.  Does this sound like hyperbole?  I assure you all, it is not!!

Here are the finer details of what I noted in styles that I typically purchase, or have purchased in the past at Shapings.  I believe these are the only brands that both companies share in commonality.  Both companies have other offerings that the other does not, which you will note if you go on line to check my findings.

                  Shapings                                                                                                Tight Spot UK

                   $15.99                                        Oroblu Sensuel 20                               $21.16
                   $16.49                                        CdR Sevilla Chic                                   $26.47
                   $19.99                                        CdR Super Lucido 20                           $30.02
                   $11.49                                        CdR Vidrio                                            $15.85
                   $11.99                                        CdR Vidrio Crotchless                          $17.62
                   $32.95                                        Trasparenze Claudia Seamless             $53.04
$21.95                                        Trasparenze Pennac Stay Ups               $35.33
                   $18.49                                        Platino Cleancut 15                              $31.79
                   $19.99                                        Platino Sinn 10 Seamless                      $31.79

    *  All UK Tights Spot prices are showing in Cdn $$ and are calculated on their site when you log in from a Canadian internet connection OR select Canada as the delivery destination.  The above prices do not reflect shipping or any customs brokerage fees.  Those are above and beyond and calculated by the supplier.  Please refer to the appropriate website.

Need I say more?  Or shall we simply just let the numbers speak for themselves.

  • Yes I agree that Shapings generally has the best prices around.  I was just pointing out that at the tight spot, some of the CdR styles have gone on clearance and are now cheaper.  The CdR Miss 20 Seamless at the tight spot are $17.62.  At Shapings the same style is $29.95.  Shipping is $9.08 vs $12.31.  So for that particular style it's a bit of a deal.

Yes shipping from the UK will take much longer (10 to 15) days

  • Yes, Shapings has better prices than The UK's Tight Spot.

  • @Alex L Quite apparently, Alex, Tight Spot was blowing out their current inventory of that particular style in that brand.  I understood, when I read your posting, exactly what you were explaining.  My purposes in this posting were/are not to refute the information you shared.  This posting was merely inspired by your mention of Tights Spot, where I too had previously made a random purchase or two several years ago.  I have no recollection what brand nor styles were purchased back then. It was quite a long time ago.

But your posting made me curious, to see if anything had changed since those purchases, which I remember having been rather expensive.  Nope.  Tight Spot is not a place, with the exception of your finding, to be purchasing ones hosiery needs on a regular basis, if you live in Canada.

I have no quibble with you, Alex.  I merely wished to illustrate, to anyone who participates in these forums, that Tight Spot is not even close to being competitive, when compared to Shapings on products common to both retailers.

  • Hello Carrie,

Thank you for that detailed evaluation of the competition.   We are not sure why their pricing is so much higher but this does not deter some people from buying from them here in North America.  We see hosiery influencers on IG and Youtube promoting their site and how they purchased CdR and explaing to their viewers how CdR is an expensive pair of tights.    Well, you could say that if you purchased from their website.

Maybe it's their operation costs, warehousing, social media advertising costs.    I have personally explained to folks who complained about our pricing to focus on the exchange rate and to set our site to their currency and from there to do the math before they place the order.

We purchase the hosiery from the same place that they do so unless they really want to gauge their customers, or they need to make a more substantial salary living on the island of Jersey, who knows.

Our pricing reflects a margin that we can sustain our operations and being online for over 25 years we will continue to offer great hosiery at a great price.

    Robert

  • @Robert Safko Hi Robert

Thank you for noticing and acknowleging my recent post.  Doing that kind of comparison had been on my mind for a while.  Thanks to Alex L for providing the catalyst with his post some weeks earlier.

Thank YOU for sharing your experience and perspective as to perhaps why certain on-line retailers charge what they do for the same products, that I feel fortunate to be able to buy at resonable prices right here in Canada.  Canada is such a relatively small market, when compared to the EU, or that monster economy south of the 49th parallel, that it is often very difficult to even obtain specific brand names in this country, let alone for a competitive price!  And I'm speaking to comodities well apart from hosiery, as well.

We are truly fortunate that Shapings continues to provide quality products at fair prices, from right here in Canada, something that has become more and more significant in light of recent trade skirmishes on an international level.

You are quite correct when pointing out that TS and others are very much spending $$ on their social media advertising.  I, too, have noted several so-called "influencers" promoting specific retailers and offering small discounts, if we use such and such a code when we order.  These people are NOT influencers.  They are merely hucksters, or actors for hire, at best.  Most couldn't care less about the actual product.  Their testimonials often ring false, or deliberately misleading, when I've bothered to sit through an entire spiel.

I'm not sure what currency these women are paid in...perhaps it's only in product, and not hard currency.  Either way, their personal endorsements must be worth something to the company, and to  product manufacturer they are pitching, or that infomercial-like advertising strategy wouldn't have proliferated how it has.

I only hope that Shapings can continue to remain a viable and reliable supplier of quality hosiery for another 25 years (or more).  I feel, though, that it is one of Canada's best kept secrets, outside of the fortunate few who have discovered Shapings.  I try to help promote and support the company wherever I can, but scant few of my friends wear sheer, quaity hosiery frequently enough to become regular customers.  Occasionally, though, I'll be asked at the hair salon, or when I'm getting my nails done, where I purchased my pantyhose, after someone has complimented my outfit and shoes.  I'm always happy to inform the person that I buy from an on-line retailer right here in Canada, of which I've been a steady customer for well over 6 years, to this point.  I find, though, that most women aren't really interested to buy.  I get the sense, more than anything, that are simply curious and surprised to see another woman wearing pantyhose in this day and age.  People just have much less style and sophistication now in how they dress.  It's kinda sad to see.
